Iota Chapter History
The Alpha Class of the University of Washington was founded on January 18, 2003. The idea for founding this chapter started in the summer of 2002 as the members of this chapter came together to find a way to bring Sigma Beta Rho to the University of Washington. On May 31, 2003, the Beta Class of the University of Washington crossed into the fraternity. The iota chapter of Sigma Beta Rho strives to achieve the high goals and standards set forth by the existing members of this great fraternity... as this organization continues to grow bigger, the future only grows brighter.
Principles
Sigma symbolizes Society
The ideal Society refers to the community in which one lives. Sigma Beta Rho fosters the belief that individuals have a responsibility to the society to which they belong. It is one's duty as a brother to give back to one's family, community, and fraternity that which an individual has to offer to the ideal of service.
Beta symbolizes Brotherhood
The invincible bond that is shared between the members of this fraternity. This bond is symbolized by the word "Qurbani" which is the Hindi translation of the word "sacrifice". Qurbani represent the strength of our brotherhood and our unity as a Fraternity.
Rho symbolizes Remembrance
At a time when many individuals share a birthplace different from that of their ancestors. It is necessary for an individual to recognize and appreciate his culture. Sigma Beta Rho not only encourages its members to appreciate their own culture, but also to gain an awareness of other cultures of the members of the fraternity.
Activities
Community Service
While the brothers of Sigma Beta Rho are all of different ethnic backgrounds, it is our mission not only to work towards the benefit of the multicultural community, but that of the greater community at large including our families, college campuses, our city, and our nation. Sigma Beta Rho's commitment to philanthropy can be viewed through its diverse array of events detailed below. In that mission we look to help all individuals of our community in order to give back what has been given so greatly to us. Our community service efforts are often executed in collaboration with other student groups on the University of Washington campus. The long standing tradition of service and philanthropy efforts to better the community are what makes Sigma Beta Rho so great.
Social Events
Sigma Beta Rho recognizes the need for social events to form connections both among fellow Greeks at the University of Washington and the general population of UW students. As we continue to make our presence known at the University of Washington, we look forward to branching out and meeting fellow Greeks (via mixers and socials), other students and potential pledges (via activities, parties and other social events).
